Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator
Quick answer
Measure your waist and hips in centimetres or inches and this calculator works out your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and compares it with the WHO 2008 expert-consultation cut-offs for abdominal obesity — 0.85 for women and 0.90 for men.

The waist-to-hip formula
WHR = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference
Both measurements must use the same unit (cm or inches)
For women, measure the waist at its narrowest point; for men, level with the navel. Measure the hips at the widest point of the buttocks. The WHO cut-offs are women ≥ 0.85 and men ≥ 0.90.
Worked example
- 1
A woman measures her waist at 76 cm and her hips at 100 cm.
- 2
WHR = 76 ÷ 100 = 0.76.
- 3
Her ratio is below the 0.85 cut-off, so she is not classified as having abdominal obesity on this measure.
Interpreting your waist-to-hip ratio
| Your result | Category | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Women < 0.85 · Men < 0.90 | Below the WHO cut-off | Not classified as abdominal obesity by the WHO 2008 waist-to-hip cut-offs — lower metabolic risk on this measure alone. |
| Women ≥ 0.85 · Men ≥ 0.90 | Abdominal obesity | Classified as abdominal obesity. Central fat in this pattern is linked to a higher risk of metabolic complications — worth discussing with a healthcare provider. |
WHO expert consultation on waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio (2008). A ratio above the cut-off points to abdominal obesity.
